Position Summary

In collaboration and under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher, create a vibrant learning community for assigned identified students. Performs a variety of tasks such as, assisting the teacher in the development of an instructional program by working with students individually or in small/large groups, preparing instructional materials, maintaining classroom discipline, and conducting planned activities using teacher-designated methods and materials.  Support the implementation of instructional programs aligned to the District’s Core Values, and Mission, creating a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential and access their chosen path.  Establish relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to foster a sense of belonging and community.  Some positions require aptitude and skill in working with the particular disabilities or learning needs of students.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Educational Background

  1. Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license
  2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  3. Bilingual Spanish/English required
  4. Must be able to complete all tasks described in full job description (available upon request)
  5. Willingness and ability to assume responsibility of one-on-one working relationships with students and staff
  6. Must be able to review and follow lesson plans prepared by program coordinator/ELD Teacher
  7. Flexible, willing to work with a variety of grades to address student needs at times 

Essential Responsibilities Related to the Position

 

SPECIFIC TO ENGLISH LEARNER (EL) PROGRAM  

      1. Provide push-in support to newcomer/emergent bilingual/multilingual students in the content classroom
      2. Provide small group or one-on-one support to newcomer/emergent bilingual/multilingual students outside the content classroom or in the ELD Newcomer Program
      3. Administer state and local assessments (training provided) 
      4. Must be able to review and follow lesson plans prepared by the English Language Development (ELD) or classroom teacher 
      5. Maintain records (including student files, spreadsheets, assessments, data and confidential information) 
      6. Attend staff meetings, professional development, and in-service presentations as requested
      7. Communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents
      8. Assist in monitoring classroom management in accordance with the district’s discipline procedures
      9. Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Job Related Responsibilities 

      1. Communicate effectively and appropriately in English and Spanish in both oral and written form.
      2. Knowledgeable in the use of English, mathematics, and a basic understanding of the subjects in which this position is to provide assistance.
      3. Operate standard office equipment such as computer, copier, and word processor; and operate audio-visual equipment.
      4. Assist teachers in the planning and implementing learning experiences for newcomer/emergent bilinguals enrolled in the EL Program; confers with teachers to provide feedback on student performance, progress, and testing activities.
      5. Assist teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
      6. Supervise students in and outside of the classroom with an understanding of and provision for a safe environment.
      7. Assist with large group activities such as reading aloud, language practice, and storytelling.
      8. Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
      9. Provide information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
      10. Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to multicultural and multilingual values and environments.
      11. Collaborate and confer with students, parents, colleagues, and community members in a harmonious and respectful manner.

 

Professional and Ethical Responsibilities 

    1. Perform various clerical functions in student record keeping, monitor assignments, maintain accurate files, and other related functions.
    2. Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and play periods.
    3. Follow all safety rules and take all reasonable precautions to provide a safe and secure working environment.
    4. Comply with professional development activities as required by the District.
    5. Demonstrate computer literacy and operate software programs as related to job responsibilities.
    6. Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law and District policy and regulations.
    7. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff.
    8. Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague, or district patron, and uses or relays academic, social, or personal information only in the course of performing assigned responsibilities and in the best interest of the individuals involved.
    9. Demonstrate support for District Core Values, District Mission, District Strategic Plan.
    10. Hold expectations for high performance of self and students.
    11. Follow all laws, District policies, rules, regulations, memos, announcements, and reasonable requests by proper authority.
    12. Maintain regular attendance at work and work activities, and is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedules.

Other Requirements/Responsibilities

  1. Must maintain a First Aid and/or CPR Card if required
  2. Occasionally performs other duties as required by supervisor
  3. Participate in mandatory district safety trainings annually, or as required

Evaluation

Following the probationary period, performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.

 

Terms of Employment

NM Primary School (K-2 grades) and the Intermediate School (3-5) as needed

Days and hours to be arranged, with salary according to current schedule (level C).

The start date for this position is February of 2024 for the 2023-24 school year.
