Position Summary

In collaboration and under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher, create a vibrant learning community for assigned identified students. Performs a variety of tasks such as, assisting the teacher in the development of an instructional program by working with students on Individual Educational Plans (I.E.P.) individually or in small/large groups, preparing instructional materials, maintaining classroom discipline, and conducting planned activities using teacher-designated methods and materials.  Support the implementation of instructional programs aligned to the District’s Core Values, and Mission, creating a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential and access their chosen path.  Establish relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to foster a sense of belonging and community.  Some positions require aptitude and skill in working with the particular disabilities or learning needs of students.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Educational Background

  1. Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license
  2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  3. Must be able to complete all tasks described in full job description (available upon request)
  4. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  5. Willingness and ability to assume responsibility of one-on-one working relationships with students and staff
  6. Must be able to review and follow lesson plans prepared by program coordinator
  7. Will be required to provide health maintenance for students who have physical challenges
  8. Must be willing to learn and follow health, behavioral and educational protocols written specific to individual students
  9. Help manage and support the behavior, academic and health plans for student experiencing physical, mental and behavioral challenges
  10. Applicant should possess the ability to work well with student who are experiencing physical, mental and behavioral challenges
  11. Will need to meet the criteria for “No Child Left Behind Act” set by law, and also complete all of the requirements under the State of Oregon statutes, rules and regulations that apply to these NCLB requirements
  12. Flexible, willing to work with a variety of grades to address student needs at times

 

Essential Functions

 

Early Literacy Support

  1.  1. Assists in the instruction of students in small group or one-on-one settings, often without direct teacher supervision; revises lesson plans or teaching strategies during instructional activity as necessary to achieve reading goals and objectives.
  2. 2.Assists teachers in planning and implementing learning experiences for students; confers with teachers to provide feedback on student performance, progress, and testing activities.
  3. 3. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
    1. Communicates effectively and appropriately in both oral and written form.
    2. Communicates effectively in Spanish or Russian (if assigned) in both oral and written form.
    3. Work effectively in an environment that can be both physically and emotionally fatiguing; perform physically demanding requirements of the job.
    4. Knowledgeable in the use of English, reading, and a basic understanding of the subjects in which this position is to provide assistance.
    5. Operate standard office equipment such as computers, copiers, and word processors; and operate audio-visual equipment.
    6. Supervises students in and outside of the classroom with an understanding of and provision for a safe environment.
    7. Assist with large group activities such as reading aloud, and storytelling
    8. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing, and makes up work as assigned by the teacher.
    9. Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
    10. Provides information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
    11. Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to multicultural and multilingual values and environments.
    12. Collaborates and confers with students, parents, colleagues, and community members harmoniously and respectfully.
    1. Performs various clerical functions in student record keeping, monitors assignments, maintains accurate files, and other related functions.
    2. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and play periods.
    3. Follows all safety rules and takes all reasonable precautions to provide a safe and secure working environment.
    4. Complies with professional development activities as required by the District.
    5. Demonstrates computer literacy and operates software programs as related to job responsibilities.
    6. Maintains accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law and District policy and regulations.
    7. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff.
    8. Maintains the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague, or district patron, and uses or relays academic, social, or personal information only in the course of performing assigned responsibilities and in the best interest of the individuals involved.
    9. Demonstrates support for District Core Values, District Mission, and District Strategic Plan.
    10. Holds expectations for high performance of self and students.
    11. Follows all laws, District policies, rules, regulations, memos, announcements, and reasonable requests by proper authority.
    12. Maintains regular attendance at work and work activities, and is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedules.
  1. Must maintain a First Aid and/or CPR Card
  2. May be required to serve as a Delegated Caregiver or Designated First Aid Provider
  3. Occasionally performs other duties as required by supervisor

Evaluation

Following the probationary period, the performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
